Australian Tour of Italian-Slovenian pianist Alexander Gadjiev

a. gadjiev internaThe Sydney International Piano Competition on the occasion of 45 years of activity announced the debut on a national tour of the Italian-Slovenian pianist Alexander Gadjiev, winner of the 2021 competition.

26-year-old Gadjiev stole the show in last year’s contest, collecting half of all available prizes. Praised by critics around the world, he is now touring Australia where he will perform at 24 different venues across states and territories.

The Italian Cultural Institute of Sydney is particularly pleased to announce and support the tour of an artist on the threshold of a great international career, whose premises have already been laid in numerous exhibitions around the world. Gadjiev’s virtuosic abilities are undoubted and he will present a masterfully created program featuring music by Chopin and Schumann, together with the world premiere of a new work by the Australian composer Colin Spiers, who won the Sydney “Compose the Future” competition in 2021.

The Tour will start on October 5 and will run until November 13, including locations and dates in all States and Territories.

Gadjiev, however, will have a first contact with the Australian public in the setting of an event in its first edition which will be held in a unique scenario for singularity and which must be seen as the official presentation of the national tour. This is the Out West Piano Fest, the first festival of its kind, focused exclusively on the piano and presented in the historic Blackdown Farm (Bathurst), former studio of artist Tim Storrier. The large study and the garden rooms will be the venue for concerts and gastronomic events on the weekend from 1 to 3 October.

The Out West Piano Fest will bring together the best of NSW’s creative talent with Australiana. gadjiev locandina out west piano fest and international artists to create a three-day music festival celebrating the piano and its voluminous repertoire. Six concerts will be presented that will have different themes, related to the place, the artists, food and wine. The artists will come together in a collaborative, fun and diverse way to present combined piano programs, featuring music by Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Debussy and Mozart.

Alexander Gadjiev will also experience his first artistic co-direction and will play with artists Tamara Anna Cislowska, Stephanie McCallum and Calvin Abdiel. Of note, as part of the mini festival, is the evening of 1 October, with the Italian Night program with, at the opening, a dinner with a menu of typical dishes from the Italy.

Alexander Gadjiev began studying with his father, a well-known Russian teacher, and made his concert debut at the age of nine, giving his first solo recital a year later. Both his musical family and the eclectic culture of his city of origin Gorizia, a natural crossroads of peoples, cultures and languages, had a strong influence on his natural ability to absorb, process and rework different musical styles and languages. Alexander the sydney piano logowas selected for the 2019 – 2021 BBC New Generation Artists Scheme, providing major opportunities for him in the UK and is also an ambassador for the 2025 European Capital of Culture. Alexander received his Master’s degree at the Mozarteum of Salzburg, under the guidance of Pavel Gililov and his Konzertexamen in Berlin under Eldar Nebolsin. Alexander has performed in the major concert halls of Paris, Venice, Moscow and at esteemed piano festivals around the world. Acclaimed by SBS as “one of the most promising pianists of the moment,” The Sydney is very proud to present Gadjiev as our newest laureate. The bar is set high for Gadjiev, with other laureates having significant impact on Australian audiences – we think of Andrey Gugnin’s 33-concert tour in 2017 and of Adelaide-based Konstantin Shamray who Australia now proudly calls one of its own.

Gadjiev said of his Australian tour: “Exploring the vastness of Australia this year, sharing my music in front of live audiences across the country, meeting locals and mentoring young talent in master classes and schools will be a dream that come true for me “.
