The Società Dante Alighieri in Sydney collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute and NIAWA, presents an unmissable event featuring Alessandro Barbero, one of the most brilliant historians and communicators of our time.

In this conference, Professor Barbero will take us on a journey through the Middle Ages, debunking myths and legends to reveal the incredible cultural and social richness of an era that laid the foundation for the Renaissance and modern society. From medicine to agricultural technologies, from law to the role of women, the Middle Ages profoundly shaped the contemporary world. Time permitting, the Professor will also draw a parallel between the Crusades and European colonization, with a special focus on Australia.

A fascinating journey through history with an extraordinary storyteller. Don’t miss this unique opportunity!

The event will be in Italian and will be followed by refreshments.

ALESSANDRO BARBERO

Born in Turin in 1959, Professor Alessandro Barbero is one of the most renowned and original historians in Italy and beyond. He studied literature and medieval history at the University of Turin and taught medieval history at the University of Eastern Piedmont.

He is the author of numerous books, essays and novels and has gained widespread recognition through his TV appearances, including Superquark alongside the late Piero Angela, as well as history programs on Rai and La7.

Professor Barbero is a refined and rigorous scholar who conveys his discoveries with passionate and captivating storytelling. His knowledge spans from the Middle Ages to contemporary history, delving into lesser-known aspects of each era and presenting them with a human-centred approach. His ability to bring historical facts to life through anecdotes and engaging narratives makes history both accessible and intriguing.

So much so that the Treccani Encyclopedia coined a term in his honor: Barberismo! Often referred to as the Barbero Phenomenon, he was recently awarded the Keys to the City of Florence in February.
