Head On Photo Festival at the Institute

Banner 2

2023 marks the nineteenth year of existence of the International Photography Festival called Head On, which takes place in Sydney and features emerging and established photographic artists. Founded in 2004 by Moshe Rosenzveig with the first Head On Portrait Award, the Festival is run by the non-profit organization Head On Foundation and shows across multiple venues, including public and commercial galleries and outdoor public spaces.

The Italian Cultural Institute has been collaborating with the Festival for over a decade, promoting the participation of Italian artists. This relationship goes on also in 2023 and never in the past has the Italian presence been as numerous as in this edition of the Festival. There are five Italian photographers participating with their works: Antonio Denti, Flavio Brancaleone, Mauro Curti and Pierpaolo Mittica. Two of the artists, Fedele and Brancaleone, have consolidated their artistic reputation in Australia (Melbourne and Sydney, respectively).

This year, in addition to the Italian night at the Bondi Pavillon, set for Sunday 12/11, which we report elsewhere on the website, the Italian Cultural Institute is organizing an evening for an all-Italian event at its premises on York Street. It will be a collective exhibition by the five Italian artists participating in the Festival, which will open on November 23rd starting at 6.00 pm. Two works by each of the artists will be exhibited, to grant them equal visibility and to encourage visitors to see also the individual solo exhibitions in the various sites where they will be exhibited until December 3rd, the closing date of Head On.

Furthermore, the evening will also see the participation of the Italian singer-songwriter Lorenzo Santangelo, who will perform some songs from his repertoire. After moving to Rome for artistic reasons, Santangelo returns to Sydney for a short visit and could not fail to pay homage to the guests of the Institute who hosted him on the occasion of the 2018 End of Year Party at their headquarters and promoted his participation in the Sanremo Giovani event held in Sydney in 2019
